Our main feature this week is pure utility. We mapped out every single farmers market in Northern Colorado for the 2026 season so you know exactly where to go for produce, pastries, and local makers any day of the week.

Beyond the markets, we look at some changes happening in Old Town in Fort Collins, plus a quick troubleshooting guide for your garden if your spring seedlings struggled — like a ‘few’ of mine did — and we deliver your full Memorial Day weekend event lineup.

Grab a coffee, and let’s dig in!

The Old Town Parking Pivot

For sixty-plus years, pulling into Old Town Fort Collins meant two hours free at the curb. That's starting to change, and the debate is worth knowing about; whether you live in Fort Collins, or just come to hang on a Saturday.

What's already changed: As of March 23, on-street parking enforcement runs six days a week, Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Starting June 1, warning citations go away, and real fines begin — with standard violations rising from $25 to $35.

What's still being decided: The city is studying a proposal to make on-street parking paid within a defined ‘purple zone’ in the Old Town core, at roughly $1.50 to $2.00 per hour. If it moves forward, implementation would land somewhere in 2027 or 2028. A City Council vote has not been scheduled.

The city's argument is that the current system is financially upside-down: the most convenient spots are free, while underused garages bleed money. They argue that managed pricing improves turnover, helps customers actually find spots, and shifts costs to the people using the system rather than spreading them across all taxpayers.

The opposition's argument is that free street parking is the front door to small businesses, and that paid systems create friction that drives casual visitors toward big-box retail with free lots. More than 9,000 residents have signed petitions pushing back, with particular concern about accessibility, employee parking, and what a pay-by-app model means for quick, spontaneous visits.

Read the city's full case, and leave a public comment at ourcity.fcgov.com. The community-organized opposition — including the petition — lives at focoparking.com.

What to Do When Your Seeds Didn't Make It

Not everything survived in my seed starting station! For instance, I lost most of my peppers because I tried a new seed start cell pack and it didn’t work out. Losing seedlings is a normal part of gardening — even for the pros. Living things are unpredictable! If your indoor starts didn't survive, don't panic. Here is how to pivot:

Assess Honestly: Don't give up too fast. Leggy tomatoes can be planted deep, and pale peppers often bounce back with some real sun and warmth. If it has roots and green growth, it’s worth a shot.

Direct Sow What You Can: Crops like beans, squash, cucumbers, melons, and root veggies actually prefer being planted straight into the ground. In late May, the warm soil will help them take off fast. You haven't missed your window! In fact, the timing is perfect; because after last weeks’ frost, we should be in the clear! …

Buy Local Transplants: For plants that need a head start (like tomatoes and peppers), visit a local farm stand or garden center like Gulley Greenhouse or Plantorium. Spending a few bucks supports the local economy, and gets you a professionally hardened-off plant. Bonus tip: Check Facebook Marketplace for neighbors selling or giving away their extra starts!

Troubleshoot And Let It Go: Note what went wrong for next year. Damping off? Too much moisture. Legginess? Not enough light. Write it down in a garden journal or your phone notes so you don't forget by next spring! Then let it go, and get outside! It’s going to be a beautiful weekend.

Every contribution keeps us out in the field, digging into local history, and showing up for the towns we cover. We're grateful for every bit of support. Thanks for being part of this.
